A senior police officer said that the operation was launched on Friday after receiving a tip off about the presence of Maoists in Keralapal police station area of Sukma district. Acting upon the information a joint party of District Reserve Guard (DRG), Sukma, and Central Reserve Police Force left for anti-Maoist operation and since Saturday morning around 8 a.m., there was continuous firing between Maoists and the security forces.
Around 10 a.m., the police issued a bulletin that 16 bodies of alleged Maoists had been recovered in Sukma. Weapons such as AK 47, SLR, INSAS Rifle, .303 Rifle, Rocket launcher, BGL launcher weapons and explosives were recovered from the encounter site, the officer added.
“Two DRG jawans were also injured in the encounter. The condition of the injured jawans is normal and out of danger,” said the officer adding that Maoists killed in the encounter were being identified.
This is the second major encounter in less than ten days. On March 20, as many as 26 alleged Maoists were killed along the Bijapur-Dantewada region. Since the beginning of this year, at least 116 Maoists have been killed by the security forces in the Bastar region that comprises seven districts, including Bijapur, Sukma and Dantewada.
