Dwarka Expressway: Flyover Above Flyover, Blast-Proof Tunnel; Know All About 8-Lane Highway Connecting Delhi And Gurugram

Delhi to Gurugram Dwarka Expressway: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the 19-km-long Haryana section of the Dwarka Expressway in Gurugram.

The eight-lane high-speed expressway will help ensure seamless traffic flow between Delhi and Gurugram, the section which is infamous for perpetual congestion.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar were also present during the unveiling event of this engineering marvel. This infrastructure project is part of a larger initiative called the Bharatmala project.

Dwarka Expressway is a state-of-the-art project which depicts modern infrastructure and the growth of India in this sector. It has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 9,000 crore under the Centre’s Rs 60,000 crore highway development plan in the NCR to decongest the national capital.

Key points about Dwarka Expressway:

– It’s a 29-km long highway, which starts from NH 8 near Shiv Murti in Delhi and ends at Kherki Daula Toll Plaza in Gurugram

– The Haryana section of this expressway is 19-km-long while it covers over 10-km area in Delhi

– At Shiv Murti in Mahipalpur, the interchange has tunnels at two levels, a surface road and a flyover. At the other locations, there are two levels of elevated traffic (flyover above flyover), underpass and surface road. The new convention centre at Yashobhoomi, which is the country’s largest, has access to the expressway both through an elevated road and an underpass.

– The road will connect directly between the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi and the Gurugram Bypass

– It features tunnels, multi-level interchanges, elevated flyovers and a flyover above the initial flyover, making it one-of-a-kind

– As per the government data, over 3 lakh vehicles pass through NH 48, which usually witness traffic congestion. This new expressway will be a game changer in the reduction of both traffic and pollution in the national capital region

– A huge forest area has been developed alongside the expressway and over 12,000 trees were planted

– Dwarka Expressway connects Dwarka Sectors – 88, 83, 84, 99, and 113 with Sector-21 along with the proposed Global City in Gurugram district

– It is directly connected to IGI’s Terminal 3 through a 2.3 km tunnel, which starts from Mahipalpur. The 500-metre section of the tunnel near the airport is blastproof

– This tunnel can accommodate heavy traffic, approximately 40,000 cars per day, and has several emergency exits. It also has a dedicated control room

– The entire stretch could be covered within 30 minutes
