Sri Lanka President-Elect Anura Kumara Dissanayake Responds to PM Narendra Modi's Congratulatory Message, Vows To Strengthen Ties With India

President-elect Anura Kumara Dissanayake has expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message following his victory in the 2024 Sri Lankan presidential election.

In a post on X early on September 23, Dissanayake stated, “Thank you, Prime Minister Modi, for your kind words and support. I share your commitment to strengthening the ties between our nations.” Marxist leader Dissanayake triumphed over incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, securing 42.31 per cent of the vote, as confirmed by the country’s election commission. PM Modi congratulated Dissanayake, emphasizing the importance of Sri Lanka in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy. He expressed eagerness to collaborate on enhancing cooperation for the benefit of both nations and the broader region.
