After Indian Navy warship INS Sumitra rescued the Iranian-flagged fishing vessel Iman from Somali pirates, it rescued another hijacked fishing vessel Al Naemi with armed pirates around 800 miles off the coast of Kochi, the Defence officials said on Tuesday.

This was the second successful anti-piracy operation by the Indian Navy in the last 24 hours, they added.

Amid rising tensions around the Arabian Sea, Indian navy warships are deployed all around the Indian Ocean region to provide safety and security in the area, the officials said.

“In a major mission, the Indian naval warship INS Sumitra rescued a hijacked fishing vessel Al Naemi with armed pirates around 800 miles off the coast of Kochi. The Marine Commandos of the Indian Navy took part in the operation to rescue the crew of the boat safely. This was the second successful anti-piracy operation by the Indian Navy in the last 24 hours. Indian navy warships are deployed all around the Indian Ocean region to provide safety and security in the area,” Indian Defence officials said as quoted by ANI.

According to officials, the Indian Navy rescued 19 Pakistani nationals who were on board from 11 Somali Pirates. “Indian Naval Ship Sumitra, having thwarted the Piracy attempt on FV Iman, has carried out yet another successful anti-piracy operation off the East Coast of Somalia, rescuing Fishing Vessel Al Naeemi and her Crew (19 Pakistani Nationals) from 11 Somali Pirates,” Indian Navy said quoted by ANI.

INS Sumitra, Indian Navy’s indigenous Offshore Patrol Vessel had been deployed for Anti-Piracy and Maritime Security Operations East of Somalia and Gulf of Aden. A day after the warship rescued 17 Iranian nationals safely from Somalia pirates, INS Sumitra was again pressed into action, to locate and intercept another Iranian-flagged fishing vessel Al Naeemi, which had been boarded by pirates and her Crew (19 Pakistani Nationals) taken hostage.

Responding swiftly to the situation, Sumitra intercepted the FV and through coercive posturing and effective deployment of her integral helo and boats compelled the safe release of the crew and the vessel.
