Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he and his government were recovering money stolen from people after the Enforcement Directorate seized a huge amount of ‘unaccounted cash’ from Jharkhand.

Addressing a poll rally in Odisha’s Nabarangpur, PM Modi said, “In Jharkhand today, mountains of cash were discovered. Modi is recovering this stolen money there. When I try to stop this loot, I get abuses from some people. But tell me, should Modi not continue saving your money like this?”

On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate carried out raids at multiple locations in Ranchi and recovered cash, estimated to be Rs 20 crore, from the premises of the house help of Sanjiv Lal, personal secretary of Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam.

Congress leader Alamgir Alam, 70, is Jharkhand’s Rural Development Minister and represents the Pakur seat in the state assembly.

PM Modi further asserted that his government will send the corrupt to jail. Referring to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, PM Modi criticised the Congress for normalising corruption.

“Forty years ago, a Prime Minister came to Odisha. He said that if he sends one rupee from Delhi, only 15 paise reaches the poor. That means out of 100 paise, 85 paise was looted by the hand of Congress,” PM Modi said.

“You gave a chance to this poor mother’s son. I said if I send even one rupee (from the Centre), I won’t let anyone eat even a penny of it. And whoever eats it will have to eat the bread in jail,” he added.
